The University of the Ozarks, also known as U of O, is a private, four-year liberal arts, comprehensive university located in Clarksville, which is a city in the US state of Arkansas that serves as the county seat of Johnson County, with a population of over 7700 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.
U of O was established in 1834 and it is the oldest university in Arkansas and one of the oldest institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi River. It was founded by Cumberland Presbyterians, and first started as Cane Hill College, in Cane Hill, AR, being opened in Clarksville, in September, 1891. Its current name was adopted in 1987.
The sports teams at the University of the Ozarks are known as the Eagles and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the American Southwest Conference, in various men's and women's sports, which include basketball, baseball, cross country, tennis and soccer. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold.
Ada Belle Parks Mills, who was a Republican political activist in the U.S. state of Arkansas, is U of O's noteworthy alumni.
